HERE’S A FEW OF THE BIG AND SMALL THINGS WE’RE DOING:
We’re reimagining how hospitality businesses operate.
Driven by the passion of our people, we’ve created some ambitious initiatives for venues!
We will be exploring zero waste practices, sourcing sustainable seafood, introducing onsite grown veggies and herbs to our menus, diving into whole animal butchery, adding more plant based options to our menus, increasing our commitment to plastic free venues, ensuring our hospo supply chain is palm oil free and whatever else may pop up along the way.
As teamwork makes the dream work, we will be to engaging our hospo people, because they are on the ground and know how we can really get things flying. Our teams will be digging in deep to go above and beyond to make our hospitality experience not just the finest in the game but also one with impact and purpose at its heart.It won’t be easy but we’re doing it anyway, and as a good friend of ours likes to say, “Don’t let perfect get in the way of good”.
LOWERING OUR CARBON FOOTPRINT
These are some of the ways we are actively keeping our carbon footprint as small as possible.
- All our venues and 4 Pines breweries are powered by 100% renewable electricity. Our HQ Brookvale Brewery is powered by very special solar panels. We wanted to bring our community along on our renewable energy journey, so we made our on-site 100KW solar community funded with the help of Australia’s two leading community solar organisations, Pingala and ClearSky Solar Investment. All our electricity is sourced from a wind farm in New England, NSW, & a solar farm in Wagga Wagga, NSW, under a Power Purchase Agreement.
- Divert 70% of our waste from landfill & waterways.
- Water wise – Beer is 98% water so instead of letting all that precious H2O gurgle down the drain, we ensure we waste as little water as we can so that every drop can end up as beer. We go above and beyond the industry standard of using 5.3 hectolitres of water per hectolitre of beer produced. Currently we are sitting at 3.58HL/HL! That’s more beer for you and more water left in nature.
- Make good use of brewery by-products. To date we have given 1,576 tonnes of spent grain to a local farmer to feed the cows in Kempsey.
Carbon offset corporate flights & fleet. Since ’17, we’ve offset 738 tonnes of carbon.
We are on a zero-waste journey. One of the ways that we reduce our waste is by working with our suppliers to find ways to reduce the plastic delivered to us.
We recycle as much as we can from food waste to brewery by-products. There are some hard to recycle waste streams such as the bags that our malt comes in. We haven’t found a perfect solution just yet, but we do sometimes work with Macleay Options who upcycle the malt bags into tote bags!
All our venues are plastic-free, and some are even Ocean Friendly Certified. We decided to become Ocean Friendly certified because it was a natural fit. From the outset, we haven’t had single use plastics as part of our offering at venues and have always abided by recycling practices. We were born by the ocean and want to keep our oceans beautiful.
4 Pines has a strong relationship with GoodFish, a fantastic Australian body which works in partnership with the Australian Marine Conservation Society to re-educate people about sustainability in our marine environments, which fish we should be eating (through their sustainable seafood guide) and how better we can conserve and preserve these seminal habitats. Our 4 Pines venues use this guide to create their sustainably sourced food menus.
We still have some work to do in this space, namely switching some of our appliances away from gas to a renewable energy source. We are looking into the possibility of using hydrogen, so watch this space.
