The antiparasitic drug, intended for horses and cows, has been heavily advertised around the world for the treatment and prevention of COVID-19. FDA issues guidance warning consumers: ivermectin is risky to use

Ivermectin is used to treat or prevent parasites in animals, most commonly horses. But there have already been many cases of people being hospitalized after self-medicating with the drug. They started taking it after massive web postings that this veterinary drug is a panacea for COVID-19, according to a message from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“Given the number of deaths from covid, it’s not surprising that people are seeking unconventional treatments, including those that are not officially approved,” experts say. “But it’s important to remember that these types of treatments can cause serious harm.”

FDA: what you need to know about ivermectin

The drug is not an antiviral and has not been approved by the FDA for the treatment or prevention of COVID-19.

“The drug can be prescribed to humans to treat conditions caused by parasitic worms: intestinal strongyloidiasis and onchocerciasis (river blindness). Several topical applications of ivermectin are approved for the treatment of head lice and skin conditions such as rosacea,” the FDA writes.

Taking the drug at literal horse doses can be toxic to humans, the agency says. And even at low concentrations, its interactions with other drugs like blood thinners are also potentially dangerous.

The FDA reminds us that wearing a mask, keeping at least 5 feet away, frequent hand washing and avoiding public places are still considered effective ways to limit the spread of COVID-19.

We add that in early March, a study was published on the “effect” of ivermectin as a treatment for mild COVID-19. It was conducted by American scientists. It involved 476 randomly selected adult patients with mild covid and symptoms for 7 days or less. The manifestation and duration of symptoms did not differ significantly between those who took the 5-day ivermectin treatment and those who took the placebo.

“These data do not support the use of ivermectin for the treatment of mild COVID-19, although larger trials may be needed to understand the effect of ivermectin on other clinically relevant outcomes,” the authors write.
